About Stephen Robinson
Campaigner Stephen is a long-standing and successful Liberal Democrat campaigner. He served as a District and County Councillor for 11 years and stood in the old West Chelmsford constituency at the 2001 and 2005 General Elections. In the 2010 General Election, he came close to winning the new Chelmsford constituency, increasing the vote by 7% - one of the best Lib Dem results in Britain. Council campaign successes Under Stephen's chairmanship of Epping Forest's Leisure Services committee (1994-8), the council started the project to build a new leisure centre, after years of delay under the Conservatives. While leader of the Lib Dem Group (1993-96), the group went from 3 to 16 councillors and introduced a range of measures to open up the council to local residents. On Essex County Council (1993-2001) Stephen was deputy group leader 1997-2001 and Libraries spokesman 1996-2001. During his time as Libraries committee chair, he pushed the council to introduce free public internet access and Sunday opening. Work Stephen graduated with a Law with Politics degree. Since then, he has worked for a political research group Common Voice, Essex Liberal Democrats, CSV National Volunteer Network and the Royal Institute of British Architects. Voluntary activity Public and community service runs through Stephen's background and his family's. Stephen followed his father and grandfather into the Scout Movement. He was a member of the voluntary service group Rotaract, serving as Loughton Club President 1995-96. Stephen is a member of www.ChelmsfordRoundTable.org.uk and a range of other local voluntary groups. Family Stephen is married to Angela Robinson, who is also active in the Liberal Democrats, having stood in council elections on a number of occasions. Their son attended Tanglewood nursery school in north Chelmsford and now attends Moulsham school. Stephen's mother and father were members of Round Table/Rotary and Ladies Circle. So Stephen's summer Saturdays as a child were often spent helping out with community service activities. Stephen's father was a local general practice solicitor and Stephen's sister is a police officer. Interests Since he was old enough to hold a map, Stephen has been interested in geography and the world around us. Inevitably, political history is fairly high on the list of required reading but also the local history and geography of mid Essex. As a cyclist locally, Stephen often experiences local geography first hand! Stephen's early interest in amateur dramatics perhaps led to a later interest in politics.
