The allotments in Avon Road, Chelmsford are now all ready for keen, green-fingered residents or just people who want a bit of space in which to grow flowers or vegetables. This follows lobbying by local councillor, Liberal Democrat Simon Jones, after he was contacted by local residents, frustrated with delays at the borough council in the allocation of sites. Wed 18th Jun 2008: Back our Post Offices - save the card account. Chelmsford Liberal Democrats are backing calls to save the Post Office card account, which currently helps keep open local post offices around the country. The Government has added uncertainty to the future of the Post Office network by putting the Post Office Card Account (POCA) out to tender. If another organisation such as PayPoint or an international bank wins the tender, the Post Office Network will lose a vital part of their business, with further closures likely. On Saturday, local Liberal Democrats joined a range of BTCV volunteers and residents of the Brownings Avenue / Eastern Crescent area to build garden areas on the field in between. It was all part of the BBC Springwatch project. Local ward councillors Graham Pooley and Jude Deakin, Cllr Alan Arnot (Patching Hall) and Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Robinson took part in the digging and planting process. Fri 2nd Feb 2007: More Avenues parking relief; other Highways issues delayed. At long last, notices are being published for the extension of residents' permit parking schemes to Fourth and Fifth Avenue. The lay-bys in Broomfield Road are also proposed to have parking restrictions on them. If matters go as planned, the schemes could be in place by the Spring, but to date progress has regrettably been much slower than anticipated - thanks to the Conservative County Council. Avenues / University footpath saved. Plans to divert footpaths running from the end of the Avenues to Bishop Hall Lane have been stopped. A campaign by local residents and Liberal Democrat councillors has succeeded in preventing the diversion proposed by Anglia Ruskin University. Wed 31st Jan 2007: Campaign success - new Post Office in Broomfield Parade. A Post Office will reopen on 26th February on Broomfield Parade, off Patching Hall Lane. This follows a long campaign led by the local Liberal Democrats. They collected 1500 signatures on a petition to first try and prevent closure until a new Post Office was in place. Chelmsford's Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesman Stephen Robinson raised the Broomfield Parade Post Office closure to national level when he featured it in his speech at the national Lib Dem conference in Blackpool. He told delegates from across the country that this was, "not some little local difficulty but a national disgrace by Tesco, who, despite posting record profits, were riding rough-shod over the needs of small urban communities by closing in-store Post Offices in the pursuit of greater profits." Wed 7th Sep 2005: Broomfield Parade Post Office extension "considered" - Charman. Lib Dem Cllr.
