Support the Campaign in ChelmsfordThe Conservatives (and Labour) receive large donations from big businesses and multi-millionaires, and Labour is backed by the trade unions too. The Liberal Democrats, however, mainly rely on members and supporters for funding. With thousands of supporters across the country each making a small donation, we raise our funds to pay for leaflets, newspapers and campaigning. This means the donations the Conservatives and Labour receive from big business and trade unions gives them far more to spend than we do. The Electoral Commission's register of donations to political parties for the third quarter of 2006 shows that Labour received £3.2 million, compared to £2.9 million received by the Conservatives and £624,866 received by the Liberal Democrats. In order to win in Chelmsford at the election, our campaign will have to at least match the well funded Conservative campaign. Every extra pound we have to spend on the campaign will be used to get the message of the Liberal Democrats across.
