Tough action on crime: target drugs as well as knives; specialist rape squads3.51.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 9th Jul 2008
Figures released today show that, in 2006-7, there were four times as many stop and searches by police for drugs as for offensive weapons like knives. Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said: "The police have clearly got their priorities wrong." More details on crime figures: http://www.libdems.org.uk/justice/story.html?id=14667 Other proposals out this week could see more action in the prosecution of rape attacks. Mr Huhne welcomed proposals from the Association of Chief Police Officers. ACPO have called for each police force to have a specialist squad to investigate rape allegations. Chris Huhne said: "These proposals make a lot of sense in an area where convictions have been very low and where there is a serious difficulty in persuading victims to come forward. Better police work would be well complemented by specialised prosecutors concentrated on building effective cases from an early stage."
