Link Chelmsford's waterways

12.41.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 12th May 2008

Chelmsford Liberal Democrats have called on the Town Centre Plan Inspector to consider the importance of linking Chelmsford's waterways, specifically the building of a cut between the Blackwater Navigation Canal and the River Chelmer..

Cllr. John Hunnable has long been a campaigner for "the cut". He commented: "It has been Council policy since the 1990s to introduce a cut between the River Chelmer and the Springfield basin. Yet when the Conservatives took over the Council in 2003, they decided the cut was no longer an essential part of the Town Centre plan. Linking Chelmsford's waterways would help make the area more environmentally attractive, as well as making Chelmsford a better destination for boat users."
