Avenues / University footpath saved

11.44.00am GMT Fri 2nd Feb 2007

Plans to divert footpaths running from the end of the Avenues to Bishop Hall Lane have been stopped. A campaign by local residents and Liberal Democrat councillors has succeeded in preventing the diversion proposed by Anglia Ruskin University.

The university has also withdrawn proposals that the footpaths would no longer be classified as permanent footpaths, which would have reduced rights of public access.

Said Cllr. Peter Charman, "The local Liberal Democrats have had some productive meetings with the University. We expressed concern about the unnecessary closures of the footpaths, and asked for improved crossing points to be installed."
