Unfair Council tax has to go! - Robinson2.05.44am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 22nd Apr 2004 The average family would be £450 a year better off under the Lib Dem local tax proposals than with Council Tax. Six million pensioners would pay nothing at all. Half of all households would be better off; one quarter would pay the same.
The Lib Dems local tax proposal would be cheaper to run than council tax. If we stick with Council Tax (as Conservatives and Labour propose), most households in Chelmsford will face a BIG rise in 2007 when houses are revalued for council tax. This is because house prices here have risen faster than the national average. The value of your house is nothing to do with your ability to pay the council tax. If you look at the share of income spent on Council Tax, the poorest pensioners pay nearly SIX times more for Council Tax than the richest non-pensioners. (Source: Office for National Statistics) West Chelmsford Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Stephen Robinson is leading the local campaign to abolish council tax. Stephen and his team have been circulating petition forms around the Borough, for a major presentation to the Government. The Liberal Democrats are campaigning to replace Council Tax with a tax related to people's ability to pay. In countries like America and Sweden, councils use a local income tax so people pay what they can afford. Related Links:Back our campaign to Axe the Tax at this website.
